Robert Draws – MACAN Museum launches Playo’s ‘Ulik Ulak Alik’, an innovative and interactive art space for children, offering a dynamic and engaging experience for visitors of all ages. This exciting new exhibit, which opened on November 30, 2023, invites families and young minds to explore, play, and learn in a creative and sensory-rich environment. Located on the 5th floor of the AKR Tower in Kebon Jeruk, Jakarta, Ulik Ulak Alik combines art, play, and sustainability, creating an educational yet fun atmosphere for children to express their creativity while learning about the environment.

A Playground of Discovery: Ulik Ulak Alik

The Ulik Ulak Alik space has been developed in collaboration with Playo. A creative studio based in Jakarta, and is designed to encourage exploration through play. The creative team at Playo, led by Adil Alba, Genie Anggita, Gabriela Alinda, and Elsadira Suciana. Crafted a multi-sensory art space that is rooted in the themes of “shape, function, and chaos.” With its colorful and modular objects, the exhibit allows children to freely interact with the materials. Experimenting with form, texture, and color in a way that promotes imaginative play.

The space is designed as a vibrant playground where visitors can rearrange, stack, and manipulate the objects. This creating their own artistic visions while engaging with art in an open and uninhibited way. The freedom to explore and create is central to the experience. Encouraging visitors to express their unique creativity while learning about the world of art.

A Sensory Experience with Sustainable Materials

One of the most distinctive features of Ulik Ulak Alik is its emphasis on sustainability. In collaboration with over 10 designers and material experts, Playo has used everyday waste and bio-materials to create interactive art objects for the exhibit. Designers such as Adhi Nugraha Design Studio, Bell Living Lab, Conture Concrete Lab, and Daur Goods have repurposed materials like recycled plastics, food waste, and organic compounds into creative and functional elements of the play area.

The exhibit showcases materials like eggshells, mushroom compost, mycelium skins, recycled plastic from bottle caps, and even textile waste. Transformed into colorful and tactile objects that visitors can explore. This approach not only makes the exhibit unique but also provides an educational opportunity for visitors to reflect on the importance of sustainability, recycling, and the creative reuse of materials.

The material library within the exhibit allows visitors to explore the textures, smells, and uses of these sustainable materials. It’s a place where children and adults alike can learn about the environmental impact of everyday waste. Some will learn how it can be transformed into something beautiful and functional through creative thinking.

Interactive Play and Learning for All Ages

While Ulik Ulak Alik is designed primarily for children, it offers a rich, educational experience for visitors of all ages. The exhibit encourages children to interact with art through play. It’s stimulating their creativity, sensory development, and understanding of the world around them. For parents and educators, the space offers valuable insights into how art and sustainability can intersect, providing opportunities to teach children about the environment and the creative process.

By engaging with the materials in a hands-on way, children can learn important lessons about reusing materials, the power of imagination, and the joy of creating something from scratch. The exhibit fosters not only creativity but also eco-consciousness. It’s teaching young minds the importance of sustainability in a fun and approachable manner.
